About Hospital San Javier Rivera
OUR STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY IN PUERTO VALLARTA
- Your body will absorb less nutrition after gastric sleeve surgery, which reduces the size of your stomach, or gastric bypass, which removes part of your small intestine. You will need to take multivitamins every day to compensate for this.
- Not drinking the recommended amount of water after your surgery can lead to dry skin, vision issues, and hair loss. Meanwhile, drinking liquids with your meal instead of in-between them can fill you up too quickly, making you not eat enough solid food.
- Severe nausea and stomach cramps, known as dumping syndrome, can occur if you eat high-calorie sugary or fatty foods.
- Drinking fizzy drinks after your surgery can fill up your reduced stomach with gas and prevent you from eating enough actual food.
- Not chewing foods thoroughly as instructed after weight loss surgery can lead to digestive blockages and pain.
- Not abstaining from alcoholic drinks after weight loss surgery can make you sick, as alcohol will be absorbed much faster than before.
- Overeating can stretch out the small pouch created from your stomach during gastric bypass surgery while still healing.
- Consuming caffeinated beverages, which is not recommended, can cause you to develop acid reflux and dehydration.

What can I eat after weight loss surgery?
GASTRIC SLEEVE POSTOPERATIVE DIE
After your gastric sleeve procedure, you will need to work up to eating small meals made up of solid foods. After that, you must make a life-long commitment to your new diet.
For the first week, you should start with a clear liquid diet, like sugar-free protein shakes made with water or broths. Diet sports drinks can replenish electrolytes.
During the second week after surgery, nutritional shakes, small amounts of soup, non-fat yogurt, and thinned oatmeal can be added. You can then move on to pureed fish and vegetables, cottage cheese, mashed bananas, and scrambled eggs during week three.
Week four can see some solid foods added to your diet, but avoid high-carb pastas, sugar, fat, dairy, and tough-to-digest foods, like steak and nuts. Options can include thoroughly cooked chicken, fish, veggies, and sweet potatoes.
When week five rolls around, you can start getting back to eating many of the solid foods you enjoy, as long as they are high-protein, low-fat foods that are not loaded with sugar. And remember to chew every bite thoroughly until the food is smooth in your mouth.
GASTRIC BYPASS POSTOPERATIVE DIET
Patients who have a gastric bypass weight loss procedure will follow a diet similar to the gastric sleeve diet, working up from liquid foods to solid foods over the following weeks.
For the first week, you can consume clear liquids, moving up to broths, unsweetened juices, skim milk, and sugar-free gelatins around week two.
After that, pureed foods, like ground beef, chicken, or fish can be introduced, along with soft, cooked veggies, eggs, and cottage cheese. This should continue for a few weeks.
Around week five or six, try non-pureed foods, like ground meat or chicken, flaky fish, cooked cereals, or rice. When week eight arrives, you can start eating three small meals of more solid foods. Chew thoroughly and stick to about one cup of food per meal.
Is There a Diet I Should Follow Before My Surgery?
Yes. Our patients need to follow a strict, two-stage preoperative diet before their scheduled procedure. The length of this diet depends on your individual body mass (BMI). For example, if your BMI is under 34, you will follow the diet for five days. If your BMI is over 80, you will follow the diet for 60 days. Your ALO Bariatric nutritionist will guide you through this process after your BMI is determined and before you arrive in Tijuana.
